Section 1: Why Businesses Need External Storage
In India's booming commercial landscape, businesses of every size β from solo founders to listed enterprises β are discovering a hidden drain on profitability: the cost of storing things they need but cannot afford to keep at their primary work location.
The Real Cost of Office Space in Indian Metros
Prime commercial real estate in Indian metro cities commands βΉ50ββΉ200 per square foot per month. Mumbai's BKC commands βΉ180ββΉ220/sqft; Bangalore's Whitefield averages βΉ65ββΉ90/sqft; Delhi's Connaught Place can exceed βΉ200/sqft. When your office doubles as a storeroom, every cubic meter of inventory or archived files is displacing employees who directly generate revenue.
A typical mid-size company devotes 15β25% of its leased footprint to non-work storage β old furniture, seasonal merchandise, archived documents, IT equipment awaiting disposal, and marketing materials. At βΉ100/sqft/month, 500 sqft of dead storage costs your company βΉ50,000 per month β βΉ6 lakh per year β in wasted lease expenditure alone. Offsite managed storage for the same goods can cost a fraction of that.

Section 2: Types of Business Storage
Not all business storage is the same. The right solution depends on your goods, access frequency, volume, and whether you need value-added services like inventory management, pick-and-pack, or delivery.

Learn more →Section 3: How to Calculate Your Storage Space Requirement
Before you request a quote, it helps to estimate how much space your goods occupy. This prevents you from being over-quoted for a large unit when you actually need a small one.
Understanding CBM (Cubic Metre)
Storage space is measured in cubic metres (CBM). One CBM is a box 1 metre long Γ 1 metre wide Γ 1 metre tall. Most household and office items can be estimated using average CBM figures β a standard sofa is about 1β1.5 CBM; a filing cabinet is 0.25 CBM; a laptop in its bag is 0.02 CBM; a 100-litre drum is 0.1 CBM.
Quick Formula
Add 20% buffer for packaging material, pallets, and irregular shapes.
Rule of Thumb: BHK Equivalents
If you'd rather estimate by analogy, SafeStorage's pricing model uses residential equivalents as a shorthand for storage volume bands. Here's how they map:
Small office clearout
~30β50 boxes
Full office desk setup + files
50β100 items
Mid-size inventory batch
100β250 items
Large warehouse lot
250+ items
Not sure about your volume? Use our interactive space calculator to get an instant estimate β select items from a checklist and we'll compute your total CBM and recommended unit size automatically.

Security is not a feature to be negotiated β it is the baseline expectation for any vendor entrusted with your business assets. Here is what Tier-1 business storage facilities must provide, and the questions you should ask before signing any agreement.
Tier-1 Security Requirements
ISO 27001 vs ISO 9001 β What Each Means for You
ISO 9001:2015
Quality Management System certification. Means the vendor has documented, audited processes for operations, customer service, and continuous improvement. Relevant for all storage clients β it ensures consistent service quality.
ISO 27001:2022
Information Security Management System. Critical if you're storing documents containing personally identifiable information (PII), client data, or financial records. Demonstrates that data governance processes are independently audited.
6-Point Security Checklist β Questions to Ask Any Vendor
- Can you show me your CCTV camera layout map and the recording retention period?
- What type of fire suppression system is installed, and when was it last tested?
- Who has physical access to my stored goods, and what authentication is required?
- Do you have a current ISO certification β and can I see the certificate?
- What insurance covers my goods while stored, for what declared value, and who is the insurer?
- What is your incident response process in case of theft, fire, or natural disaster?

For Indian businesses, storage is not just an operational matter β it is often a statutory one. GST compliance, document retention mandates, sector-specific certifications, and insurance coverage all intersect with how and where you store your goods.
GST-Registered Storage Vendors β What Your Invoice Must Contain
Under GST law, invoices from storage service providers must contain the vendor's GSTIN, your GSTIN (if you want ITC), the HSN/SAC code for storage services, the taxable value, the applicable GST rate (usually 18% for storage and warehousing services under SAC 996719 or 997212), and the CGST/SGST or IGST breakup. Always verify your vendor's GST registration on the government portal before signing a contract β unregistered vendors cannot provide valid tax invoices.
The Companies Act 2013 requires financial records to be retained for 8 years. GST law mandates invoice retention for 6 years. Labour laws (PF, ESIC) require payroll records for 5β8 years. A professional document storage vendor will help you manage retention schedules and legally compliant destruction at end-of-life.
Types of Insurance You Should Understand
Goods-in-Transit Insurance
Covers your goods from the moment SafeStorage's crew picks them up at your premises until they arrive at the warehouse (and during return delivery). This is standard and included in SafeStorage's service.
Storage Insurance
Covers goods while at rest in the warehouse β against fire, flood, theft, and accidental damage. Ask your vendor what perils are covered, what the per-item cap is, and whether high-value goods need a separate declaration.
Any warehouse or storage facility in India must hold a valid Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the local fire department. Ask to see this document. An expired or absent Fire NOC is a serious regulatory and safety red flag.
If your business stores food products, edible goods, or food-contact materials, your storage vendor must hold a valid FSSAI license. Storing regulated food products with an unlicensed vendor can expose your business to FSSAI enforcement action.
Section 8: How to Choose the Right Storage Vendor
The Indian storage market has grown rapidly, and not all providers meet the standards that businesses require. Use this 10-point evaluation framework before committing to any vendor.

Section 9: City-Specific Storage Notes
Storage needs vary by city β climate, dominant industries, and seasonal demand patterns all affect which storage features matter most in each location. Here is what SafeStorage has learned from serving businesses across India's major metros.
Mumbai
Hub: Bhiwandi
Peak storage demand: JuneβAugust (monsoon season). High ambient humidity (80β90% RH) poses a serious risk to documents, electronics, and textiles. Ask specifically about dehumidification systems. Furniture stored during monsoon must be shrink-wrapped and elevated off the floor. Bhiwandi's central location gives fast access from Thane, Andheri, and Navi Mumbai.
Mumbai storage details →Bangalore
Hub: Whitefield
IT equipment is the dominant stored category β servers, laptops, peripherals from tech companies undergoing refresh cycles. Air-conditioned storage is required for servers and active electronics. Whitefield hub serves HSR Layout, Koramangala, Indiranagar, and the outer ring road IT corridor efficiently. Startup culture means high demand for flexible, short-term storage.
Bangalore storage details →Delhi / Gurgaon
Hub: Udyog Vihar
Winter (NovemberβJanuary) creates high demand for furniture and household goods storage as offices and homes are reorganised. Wooden furniture and leather goods need climate protection against extreme cold. Udyog Vihar in Gurgaon is centrally located for the entire NCR corridor, including Noida, Faridabad, and central Delhi. Corporate document archival is the highest-volume category.
Delhi/Gurgaon storage details →Hyderabad
Hub: Jeedimetla
Hyderabad's growing pharma and life sciences cluster drives demand for temperature-controlled storage. Our Jeedimetla facility offers temperature-monitored sections suitable for pharmaceutical raw materials and intermediate products (subject to FSSAI/CDSCO requirements). HITEC City's IT companies also generate strong demand for IT asset storage. Humidity is moderate, but summer temperatures require AC for sensitive goods.
Hyderabad storage details →Chennai
Hub: Ambattur
Document and record storage is the dominant category for Chennai businesses, driven by the city's strong legal, banking, and manufacturing sectors. Ambattur hub is well-positioned for Anna Nagar, Guindy, and OMR. High year-round humidity and pre-monsoon heat make climate protection essential for paper records and electronics. Automotive ancillary companies also use our facility for component storage.
