The Challenge
A Pune-based auto-components manufacturer producing precision gearbox assemblies for a major OEM received a shock in Q3 when the OEM delayed their entire quarterly purchase order by six weeks. The production line had been running to schedule, and 1,800 cubic feet of finished gearbox assemblies — packed on pallets — were sitting on the factory floor. The assemblies could not be left outdoors or in unprepared areas because of the precision nature of the components and the OEM's incoming inspection requirements. The factory floor they occupied was worth ₹180 per square foot per month in internal cost accounting, meaning the blocked space was costing the business over ₹3.2 lakh per month in opportunity cost alone — space that should have been used to start the next production batch.
What We Did
SafeStorage mobilised four trucks and completed the pickup in two days. Every pallet was barcoded and photographed at the factory before loading — a full induction inventory was shared with the manufacturer's production planning team within 24 hours of the last truck arriving at the facility. The assemblies were inducted into a dedicated, climate-aware bay, segregated from other clients' goods. The manufacturer's team had live visibility into stock levels via the digital inventory. When the OEM resumed its orders three weeks into the delay and then extended for a further three weeks, SafeStorage fulfilled batch-wise releases over four weeks — delivering specific pallet quantities directly to the OEM's incoming goods dock on the production planning team's schedule. The entire batch was cleared over the four-week release cycle without a single item discrepancy.
The Result
The manufacturer freed 1,800 square feet of factory floor within 48 hours of calling SafeStorage. The cost of the storage arrangement was ₹54,000 per month — against the ₹3.2 lakh per month of floor space cost the stock was consuming. The production line was able to start the next batch on schedule, with no delay to the manufacturing calendar. The production head noted that the digital inventory and batch-release capability were operationally equivalent to having an external warehouse under their direct control.
